Teeth Whitening Durban

What Are The Benefits Of A Teeth Whitening Treatment?

If you’re looking for a trusted and safe way to brighten up your smile, then our teeth whitening treatment might just be what you need. We offer a range of different teeth whitening treatments at our clinic in Durban, Musgrave Park South Africa. These treatments will help you achieve whiter teeth in a safe and controlled way.

Whitening toothpastes are not a good way to go because contrary to what manufacturers advertise the effect it has is more mechanical than chemical since the average person only brushes for 20-30sec at a time and to have a chemical effect you need contact time for the chemicals to work. What toothpaste manufacturers do, is to put small particles in the toothpaste to act like sandpaper, this then removes external stains like tea and coffee stains from the areas you reach, while scrubbing your teeth. It is very effective but only where your brush reaches and it does not change the inherent colour of your teeth.  If you however keep using a whitening toothpaste your teeth will eventually go darker because you slowly but surely are brushing all your enamel away. While the interproximal areas gets darker and darker because the brush never gets to scrub those spots. Enamel is the only white part of your tooth and the thinner the enamel gets the more the underlying dentine shines through thereby making your teeth darker or yellower.

What you want is to break down the proteins in the tooth structure that causes the yellowness and this can only be done effectively and harmlessly with the correct CONCENTRATION VS TIME use of agents like Carbamide peroxide or Hydrogen peroxide.

Secondly, you want to ensure that the bleaching agent is in contact with the correct areas of your teeth and this can only be achieved with a customized bleaching tray.

Therefore I am not in favour of over-the-counter bleaching packages because the gels end up on the wrong side of the teeth our even worse on the gums and the whole experience becomes a mess and does harm rather than good.

What Does The Process Involve?

To begin with, we’ll take an impression of your teeth so that we can make a customized bleaching tray that snugly fits only your teeth. Like a “glove” made for your unique mouth. This ensures that the whitening gel won’t damage them while whitening your teeth. Then, you’ll apply the whitening gel directly onto your teeth using special trays. After 30 min, you’ll remove it.  Finally, you rinse your mouth out with water and carry on with your day. A typical course is five applications over five days. But it does not have to be consecutive.

Can I Whiten My Teeth At Home?

Yes as I explained that is what you’ll do. It can be done in the dental office as well, but then you will be charged for the use of surgery time which makes it 5 x more expensive and it’s so simple to do at home so why waste money?

How much does it cost to have my teeth whitened?

How Long Will It Take To See Results?

It will be noticeable from the 3rd treatment on, but in actual fact, after the first application it already changes but because it’s not so dramatic, few people notice it immediately.

What is it?

Bleaching of teeth is a chemical teeth whitening process, whereby protein molecules that cause tooth staining and dark yellow dentine, get broken down thus causing whitening of the inherent tooth colour.
